- Surface film is the specific problem, with established main filtration already in place.
- A quieter-flow position leaves the floating intake free to rise and fall.
- You can reach the sponge and impeller for upkeep and observe nearby livestock.
Keep capacity and safety claims separate
The rating leaves several checks to the actual aquarium:
- The 400 L aquarium rating describes intended tank size; 400 L/h describes nominal North American pump flow.
- Surface collection supplies neither full biological filtration nor protein-skimmer operation.
- No universal intake-safety guarantee is established for fry, shrimp or every small fish. Match the unit and monitoring to the animals.
What matters in use
Self-powered collection
A208 is a powered unit with its own collection sponge. The older A240 surface intake uses a different arrangement and has different instructions.
Separate flow controls
The flow slider and intake dial adjust different parts of operation. Their usefulness depends on space for the float and a suitable installation position.
Serviceable components
The sponge and impeller can be accessed for cleaning. Include this maintenance access when deciding whether the unit fits near a rim, lid or other equipment.

Care and setup
Make space to inspect the float and remove the sponge. The North American manual calls for sponge care and monthly impeller cleaning, with electrical equipment disconnected as directed before handling. Keep water-quality checks in the routine even when the surface looks clear.

Which electrical version should I order?
Match the unit’s regional label to your supply. The North American A208 manual lists 120 V, 60 Hz and 3.3 W; other regional ratings must not be combined with these values.
Does the body height include all the space it needs?
The approximate body dimensions do not provide the whole installation clearance. The floating intake needs travel above the body, and the unit must remain accessible for service.
Can surface clarity confirm that filtration is adequate?
No. A clear-looking surface cannot establish ammonia, nitrite or oxygen levels, or the capacity of the main filter. Surface appearance and water testing answer different questions.
